Our Step-by-Step Heritage Masonry Restoration Process
Restoring heritage masonry isn’t a one-size-fits-all job—every historic home or landmark has its own story, materials, and challenges. At Stone & Trowel, we follow a proven, collaborative process designed to preserve authenticity, ensure longevity, and comply with heritage standards like the Heritage Conservation Act.
We don’t offer free assessments—our detailed evaluations are a professional service that delivers real value through thorough analysis and clear recommendations. This upfront investment helps avoid costly surprises and ensures your project starts on solid ground.

1
Initial Inquiry & Project Discussion
Reach out to us via phone (250-986-0324) or email (stoneandtrowelrestoration@gmail.com). We’ll discuss your property, concerns (e.g., cracking mortar, efflorescence, chimney issues), timeline, and budget. This conversation helps us understand scope and determine if we’re the right fit as well as the costs associated with your assessment.
2
Paid Masonry Assessment
We schedule an on-site visit for a comprehensive evaluation. This includes:
• Visual inspection of surfaces and structure.
• Mortar sampling and compatibility testing (to match original mix).
• Photogrammetry or detailed documentation for hidden issues.
• Condition report with prioritized recommendations, scope outline, and estimated timeline/budget range.
This step is essential—it’s how we identify root causes (e.g., poor drainage, incompatible past repairs) and tailor solutions. We invoice for this service separately.
3
Proposal & Agreement
Based on the assessment, we provide a detailed written proposal covering scope, materials (e.g., custom Hotlime mix), timeline, pricing, and compliance notes (HAPs if needed). We review everything together and answer questions before you commit.
4
Preparation & Permitting
If required (e.g., for designated properties), we assist with Heritage Alteration Permits or other approvals. We coordinate scaffolding, site protection, and any partner work such as subcontractors (e.g., we utilize our sister company Lennox Masonry for additional stonemasons and bricklayers on larger projects).
5
Execution
• Safe mortar removal (using specialized tools to protect historic brick/stone).
• Cleaning (DOFF Integra steam cleaning system if needed).
• Repointing or rebuilding with breathable, compatible materials.
• Reinforcement or replication as required.
We work methodically, keeping disruption minimal and the site clean daily.
6
Preparation & Permitting
Proper curing (misting for weeks) ensures strength and durability. We conduct a final walkthrough, address any touch-ups, and provide maintenance guidance.
7
Ongoing Support
We offer follow-up advice and can schedule long-term maintenance checks to keep your heritage masonry performing beautifully for decades.
Why Our Process Works
This methodical approach minimizes risks, respects heritage guidelines, and delivers results that last. We’ve used it successfully on landmarks like Government House and private homes across Victoria—always prioritizing quality over shortcuts.
