Summary:

Stone & Trowel provided heritage masonry consulting for the restoration and reconstruction of rare 17th-century Gothic limestone remnants (doorways, arches, and a rounded window) originally from an Italian cathedral and imported via France. These were transformed into garden features at the historic Oldfield Estate (Norfolk Heritage Lodge), a 1914 Samuel Maclure–designed Arts & Crafts mansion.

Challenge: The heavy, incomplete limestone pieces lacked original buttresses, were irreplaceable, and required stable foundations on garden terrain while preserving centuries-old carvings. The owners needed expert guidance on how to properly restore these irreplaceable heritage elements.

Our Consulting Solution:

  • Conducted comprehensive condition assessment with detailed photographic documentation

  • Analyzed original limestone composition and mortar compatibility requirements

  • Wrote restoration specifications for excavation, foundation work, and lime-based mortar mixing

  • Specified custom lime-based mortar formulation for breathability and compatibility

  • Prepared tender documents for contractor bidding

  • Reviewed contractor bids and provided selection recommendations

  • Conducted mid-project inspections to verify foundation work and mortar compliance

  • Performed final inspection to confirm work met heritage specifications

Result:

The features now stand securely as romantic focal points in the estate's sprawling gardens, fully compliant with heritage standards and seismically sound. The project showcased innovative preservation and helped the owners enhance the property's historical charm. The contractor completed all work exactly per our specifications. → Oldfield Estate 17th-Century Limestone Restoration
